MNOC News
The fun and popular night Adventure Runs are back thanks to the efforts of Stephen "Swampateer" Bullard. Adventure Runs are mass start events - either solo or team - with a mix of trail running and intermediate navigation. Two events are planned for this fall: the first on Friday, October 3rd and the second on Friday, October 17th. Both events start at Reynolds Park (7201 W 83rd St, Bloomington, MN) and proceed a nearby location for the "fun in the forest". Plan on hanging around a suitable local establishment afterwards. Headlamp wattage unlimited ... whatever weight of battery you can carry ... no extension cords allowed. Cost is $5 per person. Electronic punching will be used and rental of one e-punch stick per team is included in the entry fee. There is a $30 charge for a lost e-punch stick. Online registration is currently open for both events. Send any questions to Stephen Bullard.
A fun weekend of orienteering with 3 events (Minnegoat, Night-O and Short-O) spread out over the weekend. Courses set by Owen Baird. Sat Oct 11th (day): Minnegoat (a long distance O course with mass start , about 15 km), half length MinneGoat (about 8 km), and orange (map hike) course (about 4 km). MinneGoat and half length MinneGoat will have a mass start at 11:00 AM, Saturday, Oct 11. Map hike course starts from 10:30 to 1:00. Start and finish area at Shafer Lake Day Use Area. Sat Oct 11th (evening): Night Score-O at 8:00 PM, registration at 7:00. One hour event. Start and finish area at eastern-most parking area on Pillsbury Forest Road (0.3 miles west of CR 77). Sunday Oct 12th (AM): 9:00 AM short distance event. Start and finish area TBD. All events are located in the Pillsbury State Forest located just northwest of Brainerd, MN. More information, including directions to the area, is available on the Pillsbury State Forest map page. Pillsbury Forest Road (Night-O start) is located west of 77, 4.5 miles south of 15. The Night-O will start at a parking area 0.3 miles west of 77. All three events with preregistration will be $12 for members, $21 for non-members. Regular MNOC fees apply for the individual events: $4 for junior members, $5 for members, $8 for non members (up to 3 people for one fee, additional maps $3). There is a $1 per event discount for on-line preregistration. Online pregistration is currently available. Minnegoat T shirts will also be available for Minnegoat participants on a first-come first-served basis. Cost is $8. Camping is available at Rock Lake State Forest Campground. The campground does not accept reservations. Look for the control flag in the campground for where MNOC folks are. Facilities consist of vault toilets and hand pumped well water. Additional camping is available at Crow Wing State Park south of Brainerd. Directions to Rock Lake: Take highway 210 from the Brainerd area west about 10 miles to Pillager. Take County Road 1 north (at a BP station) for about 8 miles to the Rock Lake access road. This road is on the left (west) just past a scenic overlook on the right and is marked with a large brown DNR wooden sign. The Rock Lake campground is about two miles down this road. To get to the Saturday start at the Shafer Lake Day Use Area from Rock Lake, continue north on highway 1 for about 2 miles to highway 15. Turn right, east on 15. The Shafer Lake Day Use Area entrance is on the right (south) side of the road 1.5 miles east of 1. Small game hunting season will be open during the events. Bright colored clothing, particularly blaze orange, is recommended. Ticks may be common. Pre-treating garments with permethrin type sprays such as Permanone is effective in repelling ticks. Liberal use of DEET repellants is also effective. Send any questions to maps@mnoc.org.
We hope you will take advantage of this new service so that MNOC can better plan events and speed up registration on the day of the event. You and MNOC will not have to handle cash on the day of the meet, plus you can make sure that your name is typed in correctly in the results (rather than us having to attempt to decipher your handwriting on the punch card). This preregistration is accessed on the web site either from the Register for an Event link on the menu, or from the main event schedule (click on each event). Sign up now for one event - or many. Remember that you can add multiple registrations to your shopping cart and pay for them all at once.
The MNOC Board of Directors voted to standardize the start windows and course closing times for the 2006 season. The decision was based on our real world experience over the past few years, and took into account the actual number of participants in our events, the volunteer workload, and safety concerns relating to early sunset in the fall and winter months. The new schedule is as follows:
